Maintenance and Gardening At Big Yellow Storage
In January 2022 we started our maintenance contract to look after the land around Big Yellow Storage - just opposite the Bzz garage on Rotschild Street in West Norwood.
Expanding our gardening actions we have taken the exciting opportunity to look after more green spaces in the area we care for.
Big Yellow Storage management had ceased its maintenance contract with their previous commercial gardeners in 2021 and were looking for an alternative solution that could provide benefits to the local environment.
Project aims
○ Improve the biodiversity of the site; planting native hedge saplings on a barren area, increasing the number of varieties, including flowering ornamental shrubs for pollinators
○ Maintain the store’s green areas in a wildlife friendly way (no chemical spraying)
○ Extend the green corridor in an industrial estate with the Bus Garage and Big Yellow Storage leading the way.
Benefits
○ Improve the frontage of Big Yellow Storage, enhancing visual interest
○ Provide habitat for birds and insects in a predominantly urban area
○ Mitigate climate change. Planting will alleviate the ‘heat island effect’ (plants keep an area cooler during hot spells), reduce CO2, improve air quality by greening, prevent flash flooding by preserving an unpaved area to act as a rain run off.
